We could visit real castles. This one,
Berg Eltz, was just an hour and a half away.
We could see places we had always read about. Switzerland, for instance,
was only four hours away. This was a view of the Eiger, the Monck, and the
Jungfrau from our hotel.

We could usually drive just an hour or two and watch the Tour de France
go by. This one was in 2001.
The museums are wonderful. (Our friend
Ralf, looking at the other side of this painting, didn’t know he
was being photographed.)
